La sede di Merano produce i cristalli di silicio di diverso diametro (150mm, 200mm e 300mm), che vengono spediti alle altre sedi del Gruppo: a Novara oltre che in Malesia, Taiwan, Corea del Sud e Giappone, per essere tagliati in fette sottili (wafer) e venduti ai clienti finali. Il sito di Novara, sede della SpA, attivo dalla fine degli anni ‘70, è il più grande produttore di fette di silicio da 200mm di tutta l’UE. Qui il processo produttivo prevede la lavorazione dal taglio del cristallo fino al completamento con la produzione delle fette lucidate e/o epitassiate. Il 40% della produzione da 200mm italiana rimane nell'Unione Europea, mentre il restante 60% va in Asia e negli Stati Uniti (Infineon e STMicroelectronics sono due clienti chiave per le esportazioni di MEMC poiché, oltre che in Europa, hanno siti di produzione in Asia, Malesia, Singapore e Stati Uniti). SPM was founded in 1988 by Ambrogio Sala, who is still the President of the company.
