About Charles Huschle

As a hospital chaplain since 2013, I have worked with diverse populations across the country. These include the Massachusetts General Hospital during the week of the bombing of the Boston Marathon in 2013, when I served people directly and indirectly affected by this event, to the more quiet environments of general medicine units in Boulder, CO. I was most recently an interfaith chaplain at the Lowell (MA) General Hospital, where I supported patients, family, and staff during the peak of COVID. My training and background come from a grounding in Zen Buddhism. I have special interests in the following areas, both in hospital and in other settings: addiction recovery, sexual abuse recovery and advocacy (especially for men), mental health, supporting children and their parents in the hospital, PTSD recovery, mental health chaplaincy, and "street" chaplaincy. I am a trained Recovery Coach and Crisis Intervention/Debriefing Specialist. I have also been a mentor to cancer patients through the Dempsey Center of Portland, ME. For the past two years I have reviewed cancer grant research proposals for the Department of Defense Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program in the role of "consumer" reviewer. I serve as an advocate for male survivors of sexual abuse who were abused as children by teachers, and have many connections in the legal and therapeutic world for helping men recover from such abuse. I write regularly on issues around abuse recovery, art, and Zen Buddhism. I have interests in disability rights and issues, as I am also living with disabilities. I am also a published writer of fiction and nonfiction, and my art (paintings and installations) have been exhibited in galleries in Rockport, MA, Denver, CO, and Boulder, CO.
