About Derek Fugitt

While growing up on a medium-size crop farm in Bakersfield, CA, I accumulated several skills involving mechanics, electrical, carpentry, and basic problem solving-Participating in multiple team sports since I was 5 years old (primarily and most importantly baseball), taught me the invaluable importance of teamwork, discipline, and self-respect-Attending and graduating from Westmont College revealed that I can adapt to a foreign environment by implementing my skills in order to overcome obstacles and challenges. My college experience taught me the importance of time management-Playing baseball at Westmont College allowed me to achieve my childhood dream of being a college athlete. Due to the demanding nature of college athletics, my ability to multi-task was brought out by balancing academics and athletics-After college, working at two hotels revealed my talent and appreciation for customer service-I was floor trainer for Channel Islands YMCA. I really enjoyed this position because I was encouraged to form relationships with members, and provide them an approachable outlet for assistance. I was also an Assistant Manager for a small sporting goods store called Montecito Sports. At the store, I had been given several responsibilities, including running the store by myself on weekends. Again, I was working along-side customers and providing them with honest service and integrity- Currently, I am working at a high school as a Mild/Mod special education teacher. I have experience in the roles of: Program Specialist, Assistant Program Specialist, and co-teaching.
