North West Reserve Forces' And Cadets' Association

The Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association for the North West of England and Isle of Man (NW RFCA) is the organisation which facilitates, supports and promotes the Volunteer Reserve Forces of all three Armed Services and the three Cadet organisations in the region. Reservists and Cadet Adult Volunteers choose to serve, giving their time and commitment to their community and our country. They rely on and deserve the support of a network of dedicated organisations staffed by people familiar with their environment who understand the context of their contribution and have their interests at heart. The 13 Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Associations (RFCAs) provide this point of contact around the United Kingdom, and at a national level through the Council of RFCAs (CRFCA). NW RFCA has a membership of over 150 experienced professional people interested in Defence. These include the commanding officers of Reserve and Cadet units in the region; selected naval, marine, military and air members who are serving or retired reserve and regular personnel; and, representative members from Local Government, Universities, Employers, Employees and the Cadet organisations. Together, the Association Membership of NW RFCA advocates on behalf of reservists, cadet adult volunteers and cadets in the region, ensuring that they continue to thrive with the support of their local communities, employers and schools. NW RFCA is also responsible for the Volunteer Estate, comprising some 270 properties including the Naval Regional Headquarters, 40 Army Reserve Centres and cadet huts belonging to the Army Cadet Force (ACF) and the Air Training Corps (ATC). About US Recruiting across East Anglia, 2623 Squadron is proud of its local heritage with the wolf insignia reflecting the association Saint Edmund. Based at RAF Honington, near Bury Saint Edmunds, they train civilian men and women to become reservist RAF Gunners, working along-side their regular counterparts. Trained to operate within the Complex Air Ground Environment (CAGE) of an airfield, their command function and individual skills are routinely tested to ensure that measured Force is deployed to counter any ground threat. Reserve Gunner commitment is a minimum of 27 days a year and they can operate where ever the RAF is; home or deployed. 335 Medical Evacuation Regiment

335 Medical Evacuation Regiment is the British Army’s dedicated medical evacuation unit. A specialist unit of the Army Reserve, the Regiment develops the skills and experience of its soldiers and officers in pre-hospital emergency care and medical evacuation so that they are ready to deploy on operations and exercises around the world. The Regiment is tasked to provide a forward medical evacuation capability, from point of injury rearwards, and is the focal point for Medical Emergency Response Teams (MERT) within the Army Reserve. It also provides a tactical medical evacuation capability, including high dependency in-transit care, and can generate a range of other mounted and dismounted medical assets such as Pre-Hospital Treatment Teams (PHTT). All this is done via the range of Army ambulance platforms, including the Battlefield Ambulance (BFA), protected mobility ambulances (Mastiff and Ridgeback) and tracked armoured ambulances (Samaritan and Bulldog). The Regiment has three Squadrons each compromising of a number of Forward and Tactical Medical Evacuation Troops and each Squadron is paired with one of the Regular Army’s three Armoured Medical Regiments. 335 Medical Evacuation Regiment recruits qualified and student doctors, nurses and paramedics as well as non-clinical people who want to train as a combat medical technician, human resources specialist or driver. Although their headquarters is in York, as a specialist unit they recruit Reservists nationally and train throughout the UK and overseas. They do not meet weekly and for that reason the minimum commitment is less at 19 days each year. There is no minimum length of service. The Regiment has a long and illustrious history which can be traced back to the ambulance trains of the Boer War of 1899 to 1902. Since its formation in 2005, personnel have deployed on operations in Afghanistan, Cyprus, Iraq, South Sudan and Sierra Leone.

Britannia Royal Naval College has been training Royal Naval officers on its current site since 14th September, 1905. In fact, naval officers' training in Dartmouth goes back to 1863, when the old wooden ship HMS Britannia was first moored in the River Dart. Sporting Force

Sporting Force is a registered charity that supports ex-service personnel, reservists and service leavers. We offer them a route into civilian employment within the professional sports industry. We help veterans and their families by offering education, exercise and social events to help relieve mental health and social isolation. All the opportunities we offer are inclusive and can be adapted to meet the needs of our disabled veterans. Veterans Places, Pathways And People portfolio lead for North East and Yorkshire supporting 10 projects to make sure that every veteran can access the support and assistance that they require. Research has suggested that the two best self-help strategies are exercise and social support. For anxiety sufferers exercise helps reduce worry, panic and other symptoms. Sporting Force offers sport, exercise, camaraderie and being part of a team again, things that veterans all miss. We offer our services free of charge to both male and female veterans and their immediate families. PTSD and mental health affect the whole family; we understand the pressures and pain involved. Making services open to partners of veterans and PTSD sufferers we offer access to support and opportunities for the families, an opportunity to meet others who understand what it’s like to care for their loved ones, giving the opportunity to mutually support each other. Families are so important to Service personnel after being injured. Many family members provide unpaid care. Research has shown that if a caregiver is well supported, then the recovery is improved. Sporting Force offer the same services to immediate family members recognising that they also need the support and opportunities to reintegrate with life outside of the services.

Queens Gurkha Engineers

Gurkhas first became Sappers in October 1948 when 67 Field Squadron Royal Engineers was formed at Kluang, Malaya. The Squadron formed from Gurkha infantrymen who attached to the Royal Engineers. 68 Field Squadron Royal Engineers was raised at Kluang in April 1950. Later in the same year both Squadrons moved to Hong Kong. The Regimental Headquarters of 50 Field Engineer Regiment Royal Engineers was formed in Hong Kong in June 1951. The Regiment moved to Malaya as the 17th Gurkha Divisional Engineers to support operations then in progress during the Malayan Emergency. The Regiment was based at Sungei Besi near Kuala Lumpur from 1955 – 1961. The Regiment became part of the Brigade of Gurkhas in September 1955, and by Royal Warrant, on 28 September 1955, its designation was changed to “The Gurkha Engineers” and its own cap badge and insignia were adopted. Today the two squadrons (69 and 70 Gurkha Field Squadrons) are part of 36 Engineer Regiment and play a key part in operations and tasks around the world.
