The Public and Environmental Economics Research Centre (PEERC) is the first centre of its kind in South Africa dedicated primarily to Public, Environmental and Resource Economics. Our research work has particular focus on the fiscal and policy levers available to national and sub-national governments, to tackle issues of sustainable development and economic growth. PEERC which is hosted by the School of Economics within the College of Business and Economics (CBE) at the University of Johannesburg, was set up in 2017 as a result of partnership with key strategic governmental and non- governmental partners. PEERC’s overarching objective is to undertake public and environmental economics research that addresses real problems and directly feeds into policy. Given the need for evidence based policies, PEERC has collaborated with a number of stakeholders in South Africa since its inception at the University of Johannesburg in 2017.

The Operations Research Society Of South Africa Orssa
The Operations Research Society of South Africa (ORSSA) is the national, professional body tasked with furthering the interests of those engaged in, or interested in, Operations Research (OR) activities. ORSSA is continually involved in matters which concern operations researchers, such as- organising conferences at which papers on OR-related topics are delivered- drawing up guidelines for OR education- presenting short courses on specialist topics in OR- marketing OR at secondary school level- providing information to the public on the nature of OR; and - providing information to students at tertiary level on career opportunities in OR. At a national level the Society is managed by an Executive Committee (EC), which is elected annually at an Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Society. In the larger centres of the country, activities of the Society are arranged by regional chapters. Currently the Society consists of the following five regional chapters: the Johannesburg Chapter, the Pretoria Chapter, the Vaal Triangle Chapter, the Western Cape Chapter, and the Kwazulu-Natal Chapter. Seminars, workshops and panel discussions are arranged by these regional chapters on an annual basis. Case studies, theoretical work, new technology, etc. are typically presented and discussed at these get-togethers. OR is, of course, the main subject at these events, but topics in specific related areas of interest, such as statistics, decision support systems, expert systems, the management sciences and industrial engineering, are also covered. Established in 2008 and rooted at the University of Cape Town, the African Centre for Cities (ACC) is one of the leading knowledge centres conducting meaningful research on how to understand, recast and address pressing urban crises, particularly on the African continent. Catalyst For Growth
Catalyst for Growth (C4G) is a non-profit company that was conceptualised by JP Morgan Foundation and Dalberg Global Development Advisors as an intervention to promote and introduce quality Business Development Service (BDS) Providers to corporates seeking to optimise the impact of their Enterprise and Supplier Development (EDS) spend on small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs). C4G will add value to corporates or any other buyers of ESD and BDS providers by focusing on monitoring and evaluation (M&E) and analysis of BDS impact and ESD spend. C4G will publish non-attributable, but verified demographic and performance data of BDS provider partners and their SMME clients, thereby enabling corporates to make informed decisions about where to direct their ESD spend as well as how to work more closely with BDS providers to ensure that services to SMME clients are relevant, have greater potential for impact and development of SMME suppliers. Additionally, C4G’s technology driven monitoring and impact analytics will enable registered BDS providers to compare their performance against the industry average, enabling them to see the impact they are having in the enterprise and supplier development space and will enable SMME investors to identify finance ready SMMEs. Currently, C4G is in the beta phase, working with a selection of BDS providers and corporates with the objective to ensure that the process will be beneficial to the various stakeholders in the industry. Post the beta phase, C4G wants to develop an analytics platform with the intention to increase the quality of BDS in the market, reward the best service providers, and help link SMMEs to growth capital. The data will improve SMME services and allow the investment community to decrease costs associated with sourcing SMMEs, while directing ESD capital into high-achieving programmes. SMMEs who are seeking finance will also have the opportunity for their information be made available to investors.

Centre For Competition, Regulation And Economic Development Ccred
CCRED is a leading university research group established as a locus of knowledge and information on competition, regulation and economic development. The Centre for Competition, Regulation and Economic Development (CCRED) in the Faculty of Economic and Financial Sciences was established in 2011 at the University of Johannesburg. CCRED was initially known as CCE, and was the first of its kind in South Africa. Initially it aimed to meet the needs for improved research and teaching in the rapidly growing area of competition economics. However, the Centre’s scope has broadened to include not only competition economics, but also analysis of economic regulation and economic development. The Centre is currently running a Regulatory Entities Capacity Building Project. CCRED is headed by Professor Simon Roberts and includes a number of lecturers and associates who are experienced competition economists working in academia, for the competition authorities, and for leading consultancies.

Health Economics And Epidemiology Research Office
The Health Economics and Epidemiology Research Office (HE²RO) is a division of the Wits Health Consortium of the University of the Witwatersrand. Its purpose is to conduct applied, policy- and program-relevant research and evaluation on issues of public health of importance in South Africa. HE²RO was established in 2004 as a collaboration between WHC and the Center for Global Health and Development at Boston University in the United States. It focuses on understanding the economic and epidemiological consequences of the HIV and TB epidemics and the effectiveness, benefits, and costs of interventions. It responds directly to requests for information and technical assistance from the National Department of Health, National Health Laboratory Service, provincial departments of health, PEPFAR partners, and healthcare providers, answering questions of immediate practical relevance to these stakeholders.

The Institute of Mine Seismology (IMS) is a world-renowned independent research organisation focused on mine safety and exploration. We are the premier provider of microseismic monitoring technology, offering a digital, intelligent, high-resolution seismic monitoring and control system for mines. Expertise and Experience Our team of 96 highly qualified staff, including 19 PhDs, 10 MScs, and 38 Bachelors, boasts over 500 years of combined experience. We currently support over 360 customers in 45 countries, with over 70 active IMS seismic monitoring systems in Australia, 50 in South Africa and at least 230 in the rest of the world. Innovation in Seismic Monitoring IMS is at the forefront of seismic monitoring technology. We have pioneered the use of ambient seismic noise interferometry for monitoring the stability of underground mines, tailings dams, nuclear storage facilities, and oil/LPG caverns. This innovative method uses naturally occurring vibrations to create virtual seismic sources, providing real-time velocity change monitoring with remarkable accuracy. Ambient Noise for Tailings Dam Safety Our groundbreaking research has shown that seismic interferometry can detect internal erosion and increased seepage in tailings dams, even when other methods fail. This technology is currently being applied in real-time to over 40 tailings dams, primarily in Brazil. Revolutionising Mineral Exploration With the demand for mineral resources rising, IMS is committed to developing new exploration methods. We pioneered commercial Ambient Noise Tomography (ΑΝΤ) for passive seismic imaging, a low-cost and environmentally friendly approach that eliminates the need for expensive active seismic techniques. A Legacy of Innovation Originally instrumental in driving the implementation of passive seismic imaging for exploration, IMS continues to push boundaries.
