Institute For Life Course Health Research
We conduct research that provides evidence about what works to improve mental and other health and wellbeing outcomes for parents, children, adolescents, and adults in low-resource communities in and beyond South Africa. The Institute for Life Course Health Research is housed within the Department of Global Health, in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Stellenbosch University. WHAT WE DO Through our work, we aim to generate evidence on prominent factors that stand between individuals, families and communities and their improved health and well-being. We work closely with communities to develop relevant and acceptable interventions that seek to address issues such as caregiver mental health, early child development, HIV/AIDS, adolescent mental health, sexual and reproductive health, alcohol abuse, violence and trauma. WHERE WE WORK The Institute largely operates from a central research hub, situated in Khayelitsha, outside of Cape Town, where the team has worked for more than 12 years. ILCHR works across South Africa and the sub-continent, having run projects in Lesotho, Kenya, Malawi, Zambia, Mozambique, Tanzania, Uganda, and Nigeria. OUR MISSION At ILCHR, our mission is to work upstream in the prevention cycle so that individuals, families and communities can minimise or overcome the harmful effects of adversity. Through a life course perspective, we aim to work more strategically to build resilience at crucial “tipping points” in a person’s life, to prevent patterns of disadvantage from affecting multiple generations.

The Research Centre for Maternal, Fetal, Newborn and Child Health Care Strategies was established in 1997 as a research unit of the University of Pretoria, South Africa and is an extramural unit of the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC)- the Maternal and Infant Health Care Strategies Unit. The Research Centre is based at Kalafong Provincial Tertiary Hospital, which is a public hospital located in Atteridgeville, Pretoria. The Centres' research focus is to develop and implement effective interventions in maternal, newborn and child health care at primary and secondary levels of care. Contributions have been made both nationally by providing national audit reports and internationally by collaboration with various universities and agencies. In the last decade, over 200 peer-reviewed journal articles have been published. The current Director is Prof Ute Feucht.

Which tissues are transplanted in South Africa? Cornea, Bone, Tendons, Heart valves, Skin, Femoral Heads Which organs are transplanted in South Africa? Heart, Lungs, Liver, Kidney, Pancreas Tissue Donation is defined as tissue retrieval for the purpose of transplantation. This is a medical process that has the potential to save and transform the lives of many South Africans awaiting a transplant. Tissue donation involves removing tissue from a deceased person (donor) to graft or transplant into a patient (recipient) in need. A single donor’s tissue can be used to treat 65 or more patients. The principle of organ vs. tissue donation is the same. A person such as you and I, decide that after his or her own death, another person should benefit by receiving healthy organs and tissue. Tissue donation takes place after circulatory death (the donor is either already at the funeral home or forensic services). and can take place up to 5 days after death. This gives more people an opportunity to donate tissue. Currently, there is a huge demand for and shortage of all types of human tissue in South Africa, resulting in the sourcing of imported tissue to treat patients. Unfortunately, this has negative cost implications for patient and support structures, leaving South African state patients very few treatment opportunities. The Centre for Learning on Evaluation and Results, Anglophone Africa (CLEAR-AA) is one of six regional centres that are housed in academic institutions around the Globe with a remit to support the development of local demand for and practice of evaluation. CLEAR AA is situated in the Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. CLEAR-AA is a response to an increased demand from government (inclusive of parliamentarians) and civil society for practical and applied Evaluation Capacity Development (ECD) weighed against the limited availability of relevant services in the region. The Desmond Tutu Tuberculosis Centre (DTTC) is an academic research centre located in the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Cape Town, South Africa, established in 2003. In 2004, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, who suffered from tuberculosis as a child, became its patron and the centre was formally named. The goals of the centre are designed on a strategy built on basic and applied research, as well as on the training of students and communities in all aspects of tuberculosis (TB). The Centre operates from the premise that grassroots research must never be underestimated; including working with communities and investigations into the everyday challenges of people infected and affected by TB and HIV. Our endeavours are proof that successful treatments in clinics, health centres and even in people’s homes, are not detached from research, but are in fact interdependent on each other. Central to the DTTC’s work is the dissemination of information back to the research communities in addition to other appropriate stakeholders, including health services. The majority of the Centre’s support is from research grant funding, obtained through international and national grant funding agencies.
